What kind of gas mileage do you guys get on your F1? I used to get 120 miles per tank, given my tank has lots of bondo on it (no worry, i have another that is going on with the new paint), but now i am getting only about 70 miles per tank before my tank is dry. i know the problem is with my idle and carbs, so thats not the issue. just wondering how many miles per gallon you guys typically get.

 

I guess I couldnt even honestly tell you. For me it all depends on where and how I am riding. When I go to school there is lots of stop and go type of traffic, sometimes not getting out of 1st gear for a block or two depending on how many idiots decided to drive that day. I would say on average its about 100-110. Sounds like you might have a idle problem as you stated.

Its a happy day for me though, as we speak she is broke down awaiting carb replacement for some nasty looking needles

 

I've been wondering the same thing since i have been riding more.

 

yeah my idle is high, my bike idles at like 2500-3500RPMs. the idle adjustment rattles and raises it, but when the bike is just started it will idle right. so i just got to adjust it to stop rattling.

 

The high idle thing is not good... it sounds like you may have the same problem that I was running into, and that is the jets are not responding correctly and not staying where they are supposed to. When was the last time your carbs were apart and cleaned out? If nothing else a little seafoam in there might help the situation somewhat. Anyone else have a problem with high idle?

What happened to me was my electronic fuel shutoff went haywire and basically left itself open, causing all my gas to leak into the oil. I had started it up because I had already ran it that day and everything was fine (I assumed - and assume just makes an *** out of you and me). So it ran for about 30 seconds and then totally died, tried to crank it because I thought I maybe had slipped the clutch a little hard, but it was running a little higher on idle than it should have been, around 26 - 27. Well after it died, I went and grabbed the trailer and pulled it home, opened the oil check and fuel just started dumping out. Because it had ran my carbs - mainly my needles - pretty much starting doing bad things and are all but completely shot at this point. This is the reason new carbs are being finished up this morning.

Also what type of gas to you run? Ethanol may be five cents cheaper, but from all studies its not a good thing to burn through your bike. I personally run premium. The way I look at it is it only costs 7 bucks to fill it as is, whats another 30 cents for my piece of mind?

 

i run 87, my bike actually runs better on it. the carbs were cleaned about 4 months ago, but the shop sucked *** so i took em apart myself. they left jet #3 out, it was in the bottom of the float bowl...WTF!!!!! anyway, im over that, but we managed to bend a coat hanger and position it over around the idle adjust ****, and it held, however we took it off and cant get it to stay the same again. so after i put on my RR tail, and the new tank, we are going to pull the carbs off and give it a go around to really fix it.

 

my gas milage is about 180 to a tank or about 45/gal. it is only slighty lower around the city.

i run 87 octane. no reason to run any higher as the compression is 10:1.

i used to run stock carbs and gas milage was slightly higher, maybe another 10 or so. i was always shy of 200 no matter how much gas i tried to stuff into the tank.

as for the idle. i keep changing according to the weather. if cooler temps i up the idle, if hotter i turn it down.

Depending on how I am riding I get roughly 40-50MPG and roughly 150Miles to the tank.
