How much smaller in diameter do you think that grommet needs to be in order to fit? Doesn't seem like the freezer would be cold enough to make is shrink that much, but certainly can't hurt.

Well, I got it on there. It was just one of those things that's a pain in the *** and you have to work at it.
Instead of putting the grommet on the brass tube first, I shoved it up inside the mesh tube. Then I sanded the end of the brass tube with 400 grit sandpaper til it was nice and smooth, used a little WD40 on it and then slid the mesh down over it. Just had to twist and push (hard), repeatedly to get the grommet onto the brass tube. It was difficult but eventually it went on.

Nicely done. I'm curious what the O ring looks like when it's in place at the bottom. You have any photo's before you put it back in the tank?

It looks like the plastic tube is what sits in the little groove that you drew an arrow pointing to in a previous post. The O-ring sits around the outside of the base of the plastic tube and will seal against the bottom of the tank when it gets tightened down. Will try to remember to get some pictures. Right now I have the tank soaking full of Evaporust. Next I have to rebuild the carbs and make sure any of the mouse nest didn't fall down into the intake.

So, would it be safe to say that the internal base diameter of the Screen Mesh sits roughly the same distance from the brass tube as the thickness of that upper rubber grommet?

Thanks @Mr Lee .... this is something I am going to have to do myself. Knowing how delicate the fuel screen was on my bike, I'm pretty sure I would have destroyed it trying to figure it out.

Could you post a link to where you got the fuel screen and rebuild kit (if you used one) please ?

Default Hi Mr Lee

My screen/tube filter looks like your old one, where did you get the replacement.
I’ve just started to try and get my daughters FW back on the tarmac, like you I’m more about getting it running and moving like it should rather than what it looks like, looks can come later. Cheers and good luck with yours.

I got the fuel screen from MotoSport.com. It's an original Honda part so it was under the OEM section on the website which brings up the Honda parts microfische. Will try to insert a link here:
| MotoSport

I can't seem to find where I got the petcock rebuild kit but there are some on ebay. I thought I got it at the same Motosport website but now I'm not seeing it. This part was not available OEM but was made by a company called AllBalls. However, I will mention that when I put the petcock back together, it is VERY difficult to turn. It's like the gaskets are too thick or something and I did lube them up. I even heard this from a bike mechanic about that brand. So I would recommend maybe trying to put your old gaskets back in if they're still in good shape after you clean out the petcock.
One more thing about rebuilding the petcock. It's held together with rivets that you have to remove, and the kit gives you a thin drill bit and thread cutting screws to install in their place. They tell you how far to drill down, and I guess I didn't drill down far enough, and therefore when installing the new ones, my screws started to spin in place, so my recommendation would be to drill all the way through. You'll see what I mean.
I wound up getting some longer and very thin machine screws from Home Depot and putting them in after I drilled all the way through the petcock. They seem to be pretty tight, but I may cut off the ends that are sticking out the other side and then peen them over with a hammer, making a rivet, just to be safe.

I had to go down this route to get the filter as I could not find a replacement after I butchered the old one removing it, as it happens I did install the complete petcock it is working a treat on my Cb500 (same petcock as the 600):
