If there is already a thread on this, my apologies, but I did a search and nothing turned up.
I removed the petcock, rebuilt it, and am trying to install the new screen onto the brass tube. Anyone do this? Am having trouble getting it back together.
Do you slip this rubber grommet onto the brass tube first, then slide the screen over it? It doesn't wanna go on. I have genuine Honda parts here. Not sure what the problem is. Tried lube, still won't go on. Should I put the grommet in the freezer to shrink it maybe?
Thanks for the input but I don't know about that.
The grommet was in the middle of the mesh tube on the old one though. I believe it separates the fuel from going INTO the tube when the petcock is in the "ON" position, from the fuel going down into the petcock AROUND the outside of the tube ("RESERVE") position. So I'm pretty sure it should sit right where that little black dot is on the mesh tube. I'm just having difficulty trying to accomplish that.
There is another thin, round O-ring that goes at the base of the tube.
Can you provide more photos of the petcock for those of us that don't have one in hand to be able to examine? I'm looking for the places where fuel can enter the petcock other than from the very top of the metal tube.

Are there any openings in that metal tube other than the obvious one on the end? Is there one in the side someplace? Nice photo's but I'm still not seeing any other place that fuel can enter the petcock.

Negative. There is no other hole in the brass tube.
Here, is the same picture with an arrow pointing to where the fuel goes into the petcock when on Reserve. Keep in mind, there is a little bit of space between the screen / mesh and the brass tube.
When I was cleaning it out, I blew air through it backwards (blowing in the other end of the petcock), and when the fuel was ON, the air came out the brass tube. When the fuel was set to RESERVE, the air came out where my arrow is pointing. Make sense?
So does the O ring at the base go on the outside of the base of the mesh and against the inside of the metal part where your arrow is pointing?
Yes. I think so... and also seals against the lip in the bottom of the gas tank.
Still need to resolve my original issue with getting that thicker rubber grommet to go where it's supposed to go, so, I haven't fully put it all back together yet. Maybe I will have some time tonight to give it another try.
