Fuel Petcock Leaking

I called a motorcycle recycler and asked if they just sold the o-rings inside the petcock valve I guess they don’t. And it seems that the used Petcock assembly that screws into the tank are just as expensive as the brand new ones. We'll since I am on a budget does anyone know if I can get away with taking it apart and putting a new o-ring in there from an o-ring assortment from an auto parts store? I am guessing it’s just an o-ring and a bigger rubber puck with three holes...on, off and reserve, like dirt bikes? Before I tear into it is there anything that I should know before hand? Any help is appreciated!

Well, there's no reason not to try!! Maybe you'll stumble onto a great way to fix it. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll destroy a petcock that was broken anyway.

I bought a new one.

The most important thing you should know is that a fuel leak can turn into a fire. If you work on the fuel valve your insurance company can laugh and walk the other way. A new fuel tap is cheaper than a new bike... unless you are looking for an insurance claim...in which case you should leave the OEM valve in place and throw matches at the bike from a safe distance.
