according to a 600 F(M) manual cylinder #1 is on the same side as the alternator, which is the right side of the bike when you are sitting on it. my bike is the F(H) model so i used the same config's when i was doing my valve adjustment. The manual says to line the "T" mark with the TDC on the crankcase cover so i did, then it said that i could measure intakes of 2 and 4 and the Exhaust of 3,4. So i figured out that cylinder 4 was the left side (when your sitting on it) because i tried to measure #1 (right side), thinking it was #4 and there was no clearance. So if anyone with a 600 F(H) has a different type of config you should let me know

Psharma, If you're on the side of the bike with the clutch, alternator, oil filler, timing marks, rear brake, etc., the cylinder closest to you is #4. Put the spark plug wire with the 4 on it in there. Then 3, 2, 1 going away from you. 2 and 3 wires come from the side of the bike you're on, and 1 and 4 come from the other side.

Sorry dude. What I mean is the clutch on the engine, not your hand. Yes the right side of the bike when you're sitting on it. The alternator and the clutch are both behind that "crankcase cover." And the cylinder right above that cover is #4.
