Well...I think I found it. It is behind the carbs, under the tank, in about the center of the frame. The Clymer manual says it is on the left-hand side of the frame behind the carbs, but there is nothing there. If I've found the right thing, this is going to be a real pain to get out.

curiously enough i have been working on this same problem the last couple of days but for different reasons. My 87 600F when running does not like to come off idle. when i hit the throttle it often chokes or even dies. but if i baby the throttle open or work the throttle back and forth i can get into higher RPM's. suspecting weak spark on the plugs i started checking the electrical system. i have performed the test in the manual on the alternator and rectifier/regulator and i believe they passed the ohms tests. Did any of you notice poor performance on the engine when you had regulator/rectifier problems? another coincidence i saw here is when i bought the bike the guy jumped it from a running truck. but the connections dont appear burnt. i did a test we used on cars years ago, and when the engine is running pull the positive side of the battery to check the alternator...well i did that and the bike ran like crap.so im thinking the charging system is not producing enough electricity to keep everything going and keep the spark strong. any ideas? and blaster if you need information on the regulator/rectifier test let me know and ill send you the pages. With the bike running test the voltage across the battery terminals using a volt meter.
If you have a good voltage regulatorthe meter should rear around 13-14 volts at idle.
Anything less means apoor connection on the wire harness or a toasted VR.
As stated in this topic, check all wire connections, make sure none of the connectorsare burnt or melted, if so they need to be replaced.
Use die electric grease on all wire connectionsto prevent corrosion andplug connectionfailure
