Carb rebuilds, parts too expensive

About a year ago I completely sealed the fuel tank and cleaned all the carbs completely, had everything back togeather and it ran awesome.

I tried starting up my bike after it was sitting for 6 months and found gas leaking out of the carbs. Upon disassembly I found the o-rings that are on the fuel t-pieces were flat and level with the fuel t-piece, thus not sealing.

The dealer wanted $16, per set, for the o-rings, at 2 sets that's $32, I went to harbor freight and bought a 400 piece o-ring assortment for $10. And though those t-piece ones are narrower, I still put ones on that fit snug.

Next are the rubber gaskets for the bowls, $30 each and 4 are needed!, I understand the bike is older but come on! $30x4, $120, f-that! I'm going to buy a tube of gasket maker that is fuel resistant and make my own by filling in the channel where the gasket sits, enough to raise it above being level with the surface, let it dry 50%, then re-assemble. I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

Unless someone knows where I can get the gaskets cheaper than from the dealer, because I don't have this kinda $ to throw around, even though the bike is in excellent cond w/ only 10k on it.

Thanks!

RE: Carb rebuilds, parts too expensive

I came across this problem when I needed new shims for the rotors. Was going to be like $80 for them. My dad found some at a store and paid like $2 for a handful of them. Sometimes OEM is not the best route to go.

Any recommendations to aftermark places that sell F1 parts?

I just ordered a complete gasket set from the ronayers microfiche OEM section for $20... i believe there is a second gasket set for those t pieces that's only $11.

Was the $20 set per carb or for all 4 of the carb cover gaskets? (In the pics of each carb, the carb cover gasket indicated by a "1") Those are the 4 gaskets I need.

This is what I am looking at:

That's each carb, for a total of $80.

Still cheaper than the $120 the dealer wants I guess, still INSANE for some small gaskets, but it is an older bike so it's not like they are just overstocked everywhere like new bikes.

thanks for the lead, I will order from them.
