Does the bike idle fine when the choke is on?

the 600F doesnt have sensors for anything beyond oil pressure. you have no airflow sensors or throttle position sensors.

your issue sounds like its stemming from water entering the fuel system. drain your fuel tank and carburetors, run some seafoam in a tank of fresh fuel, and you should be ok.

"thegreenbandit" - yes, the bike was idling fine with the choke on.

"Hurricane rider" - I will get the fuel filter checked to see if there is any water in there and then work on draining the tank etc - i#ll let you know if this works.

I would think if the fuel was contaminated it would not even start. But fuel filter is not a bad place to start.

Chainstretcher, you make an EXCELLENT point. I'm not sure what else to suggest aside from electrical though. its entirely possible that the bike has an electrical issue that is invisible until it warms up, but hell if I honestly know.

my old cane wouldnt idle right UNTIL it warmed up. it was a cold blooded beast and stubborn.

Sounds like the petcock valve is turned to off, i know you said it will crank when its cold but an old worn petcock valve will allow enough fuel by to fill the carb bowls. I use to own a 88 Hurricane and it did the same thing when i forgot to turn the gas/petcock valve back to on. Check it and make sure its on or on reserve.

Good point. It could possibly a clogged petcock as well. I was having problems with fuel flow from my petcock as well. When I switch it over to reserve the problem was solved

I had a similar problem on my 88 that I thought was heat related, I would be riding and the bike would splutter a little then die on me which was especially scary whilst in the outside lane of a motorway.
My cure was to take the rear cap off the fuel pump and clean the relay contact (do not run the bike with the cap off the back of the pump it sparks like hell), then I took the petcock off the tank and cleaned all the crud off of it and from inside the tank.
Hope this helps

take the petcock out of the tank, clean it, clean out the carbs(make sure you clean the Idle jet), clean the fuel lines, and the pump if you can. you could have rust in the system or any one of these parts could be gummed up enough that it will let just enough gas through to fill the bowls initially but can cause them to refil slow enough to cause your problem. because at Idle it will take the bike a while to get hot that might be why you think it only does it when hot, by that time all the gas in the bowls could be used already.
