cam chain tensioner.

hi, ive just started my cbr 600 fs1 after the winter and its making a funny noise, (like a scraping noise) its done 29k, i spoke to my pal and he said it could be the cam chain tensioner, anyone help ? p.s. is this a big job. thanks. also i give it a run out and noticed the little gear thing that shows you what gear your in wasnt working, it was just spinning in circles.

what year bike do you have? gear selector thing?

cam chain tensionsers are easy to change. two 8mm bolts and a gasket, 10 minutes tops.
but, cam chain tensioners usualy cause a rattle sound, not really scraping...

cam chain tensioner.

:icon_shrug:its a 2001/51, it probably is a rattle, is there any link to pictures to do this. ive had a mind blank - the gear thing is the little l.e.d. display that tells you what gear your in. thanks.

Replacing the tensioner will only solve half of the problem, if that is in fact what it is. The tensioner pushes on a slider, that rubs on the cam chain, if this gets worn too much, it will need replacement as well.
