89 cbr600 power cuts
Hello all, trouble shooting question.
I’m learning how to fix my bike as I go but am stumped as to the current problem. I was riding around and suddenly all the power to my bike shut off but the lights immediately flipped back on. Tried restarting and it wouldn’t fire up but would turn over. I turned the starter switch off and on and it fired up for a few seconds then cut off again. This happens whether the bike is in gear or neutral so I don’t believe its the kick stand sensor. Obviously some kind of electrical problem, but I don’t know where to begin. Battery is freshly charged and has never given me any issues before. I do have a 1990 cbr 600 i could steal certain parts from to trouble shoot but its running great and I don’t want to go messing things up by blindly pulling off parts and seeing if it works unless I have some direction. If you were in my shoes based on what you’ve read, what would be your guess?

I am no genius when it comes to electrical issues but if it were me, I would first check that the battery cables are tight and check the voltage coming out of it. Then I would check my fuse box for any loose fuses or wires or anything suspicious. I would assume that the negative battery terminal would ground to the frame or engine somewhere, so I would check to make sure that's tight and not rusted / has good contact.
Things that cut the bikes ignition power would be the clutch switch and neutral safety switch right? Not really sure how to check those but...
Do you have a Honda service manual? That would have wiring schematics in it and a troubleshooting page. I'll go dig mine up....
I'm sure someone with more knowledge will jump in.

Sounds like a similar problem to what I had. Just off the battery is a relay. It diverts power to the starter when starting and to the bike when running. Mine completely fried, thankfully when I was in the garage. Initial symptom: wouldn't turn the starter. Secondary symptom: nothing powered up but then would come back on. Final symptom: no power to anything.
Here's the picture of my melted relay from the other thread.
