87 Hurricane Low on power/ backfiring.

Hello all,

I know i am a noob on this forum, but my CBR is new to me, and I hope someone doesn't mind sharing some advice.

So here is my issue. I have had my 600 for about 4 months. It was running like a dream for the first few months I had it. I then let it sit for about 2 weeks without starting it. Long story short i had to jump start it before it would start.

Now that it has started it feels like it has about 10 horsepower. I had trouble getting up to 30 mph. It is also backfiring. With the choke on it will only idle to about 2000 rpm, when it used to idle very high very quickly with the choke. With the choke off it will turn off fairly quickly.

I have taken a quick video so you can hear the sound it is making.

I hope someone can help, either way it is nice to see a good CBR forum out there!

Thanks in advance,
Ed

Yikes , she does sound bad ....

Quite alot of chain snatch going on in the engine too ...? which is more than likely due to the fact that she is not running/firing like she should at all ...
The back firing could well be the fuel is not getting to her properly causing her to run lean and that will make them cough and splutter , even back fire !!

We have allot of guys with these CBRS here , om sure someone will cruise past soon enough and give you a few clues ..

My advice to you since she was running ok before you parked her , would be to do the easy and simple stuff first , ...get some seafoam into her first and run the engine standing still for an hour or so in short runs , say 10 min at a time ...to see if a little running with the cleaner in the tank helps any ...?

Personally , I would not even try to ride her in that state ... !!!
You may need to clean the carbs by stripping them ?

Many people would be going straight for the chain noises , but as I said , most of that is prolly due to the engine running so rough at the moment ..

good luck ..

BTW , I fixed the link to your vid ...

Hey CBR classic! Thanks for the reply....

Turns out I am an idiot. Before I jumped the bike, I pulled the sparks to check them/ clean the leads.... If you havent already guessed I messed up my order when putting them back in.

Runs like it should now. I feel like an idiot, but I will never make that mistake again.

Thanks!
Ed
