I just found a 1989 CBR 600 with 30K Miles. It has recently been tuned up but with new tires and a battery.

All original plastics and the owner gives it an 8 out of 10

$1500 is the asking price not including the reg fees from 04 to 08 that have to be paid (not ridden and did not NON op it).

It looks great via the pictures and I am wondering, what are the obvious things I need to be concerned about with this bike?

I would like to get it but I think I've read about bad recitifers as well as possible parts issues.

Are there pros and cons to this bike?

I have a 1988 with 28k miles. Had it around 10 years. 3rd owner. All original.

It's been a solid bike. Other than the elecitrical problems referenced. Runs good and
pretty comfortable. No engine drive trainproblems.

I have replaced the kill swith and the rectifier and a couple of batteries. Probably have
$600 in it in 10 years. I ordered the rectifier from a mail order and bought the kill switch and batteries from my dealer.

I would recommend this bike.

 

i have a '89 w/ over 90k on the clock. have not had any major electrical problems other than 5 yr old battery replaced. put more money into oil, tire, and chains than i have anything else. very reliable bike.

pro:
very reliable if you take care of it.
good on gas.
good power if the bike has been tuned up properly.
very neutral steering.

con:
check wire loom for any frayed, cut, or corroded wires. this and burnt or shorted connectors. this causes a lot of electrical headaches.
feels cramped if you are on the taller side.
handling could suffer if front forks have not been rebuilt (oil, seals, etc).
make sure brakes are in good shape.
not a whole lot in the way of aftermarket parts and accessories.

Well I'm so disappointed now. The seller just told me the bike has not been registered since 04 so the fees are 350 plus smog and insurance. unbelievable!

Now i'm at the fork in the road..do i keep my cbr 94 600 f2 with 18k i just got? it needs new tires, carb job and tune up around $900 total or do i go with a 01 zx-6r that has some cosmetic things that need to be fixed with 13k miles? the zx-64 is an 01 and asking $2300 or i can put the $900 into the 94 600 f2 (total cost is $2k) and use that? the plastics on the 94 cbr are painted but never broken or bike has never been down.

 

Mich., All good points except one. I am 6'3" and weigh 200 lbs. and I have kept my cane for one reason. It fits me sooooo much better than any modern sport bike capable of cornering with the same agressiveness. Instead I have spent oodles of money making my cane more competative HP wise. For a sport bike it is way comfy.

to each his own. most iterations of CBR's have been known to have good ergos, more so than competitor models as evidenced by how many awards they have won early on being the best all around 600. it would be the same even today but unfortunately, honda loses out in the HP and weight department even with their better ergos and handling. great all around package but if looking at a more performance focused ride, honda is not it.

the banana seats are cushy compared to newer models that feel like sitting on a plank. you wanna talk about saddle sores. short rides are okay but the long haul it does start to feel crampy. btw, even worse riding 2 up.

this bike does corner well given it's neutral steering. it gives pretty good feedback as far as what the front is doing. but it feels even better with an updated frontend.

you might as well keep the f2 or get the 6r. more parts, more up to date, better bikes. your money will be better spent. smog? r u kidding? it's a bike.

I went ahead and passed on the 89 CBR. Hard to do no doubt.

Now I have the94 CBR and I just ordered decals for it (its painted by prev owner).

I am wrestling with the 01 ZX-6R or the 94 CBR. Thos immortal words ring through...."problem with old bikes is they're old"
