Default 1987 Hurricane 600 wouldn't shift into 1st then chain broke minutes later...

Hey guys I'm brand new here! Just bought this great 87 Hurricane. The previous owner recommended that i get a new front sprocket , but to tell you the truth I know nothing about these bikes or any other for that matter. I was in neutral the other day at a stop light and the bike wouldn't shift into 1st. I got it into 2nd and started moving and as I turned the corner at around 9 mph the chain snapped... Any reason why this could happen? Just bought a new chain and got it on, and obviously don't want that to happen again.

Yup, Old chain would cause it to break. You need to tighten up your clutch cable slightly at the engine end and that should fix your shifting problem.
