Default Ticking or rattle from cam position sensor area?

Is there any reason why I would be getting a louder than normal ticking from the camshaft positioning sensor?

Are you surethe noise is coming from the position sensor? If it is, then the sensor issomehow inserted too far and is hitting the sensing rotor on the cam. This is not normal.

The noise I hear most of the time is the cam chain slapping around because Honda has yet to figure out how to design a cam chain tensioner. It was problem on my '87 Hurricane too. It's most noticeable when the engine is cold.

The valvetrain does a fair amount of general ticking and tapping but it's nothing out of the ordinary.

I often notice a pinging sound at medium throttle in the 2000-5000 RPM range. It's the primary fuel injectors, and it took me forever to track that one down.

It is fairly quite around the cct, my noise is more on the left side and more so after it warms up good.

It might be a valve clearance issue, how many miles are on it? I don't remember how exactly the cam position sensor mounts to the engine, but you could try shimming it out a little (maybe .050") and see if the noise goes away. You could also remove the sensor and see if it has any evidence of contact with the rotor.

If it was my bike I'd check the cam position sensor andif the noise persisted I'd go ahead and do a valve clearance inspection/adjustment.

I think thats pretty much what Im going to do, pull the sensor and see if there are any signs of something hitting it, then do a valve clearance inspect, Looks like noones had this issue before, I even went thru the trouble of changing the exhaust gaskets just to rule that out.

Let us know how it turns out, especially if you end up checking the valve clearances.

Well nothing has worked, I geuss I will pull it down Sunday and do a valve clearance check, I was trying to avoid all that work. Looks like a full day for Sunday.

If I pull the CCT, is there anyway to tell if its bad by looking at it? Anything to check for?

Yeah it's a major job butyour bikewas going to needa valve clearance checkpretty soon anyway. I'm not sure there's really a way to tell if the CCT is worn. I think the gasket has a little oil orifice thatmight affecthow the CCT operates, it's a long shot but you could try a new gasket between the engine and the CCT. I suppose your cam chain could have stretched, but I'd hope the tensioner would adjust for that. I replaced the CCT in my '87 Hurricane and it didn't do a thingto helpmy cam chainslap problem.
