High mileage 1000rr
Hey guys, im looking at moving up from my 02 f4i to an 06-07 1000rr. I missed out on a really nice 07 with only 4500 miles on the clock a few weeks ago because i got cold feet, o well ya snooze ya lose i guess. Now i found a nice 06 that seems pretty well maintained, but it has 37,000 miles on it. If im going to drop the money on another bike im going to keep it a LONG time and dont want to have to feel like i need to get something new in 5 years because im getting way up there on mileage. What are your thoughts on higher mileage cbr's? anyone have any experience getting up around 80-100K on them?

I just sold my 2001 Kawa ZX9R w/ 30,000 miles. Aside from relatively minor problems it had when I brought it at 7,500 miles (and which persisted), it still ran like a champ. Granted it wasn't a CBR, etc, but at least it gives you a datapoint.
Also from reading around a few different forums, I've rarely (ever?) read a post about someone's bike giving out simply because of high miles. Sportbike engines / transmissions seem pretty bulletproof to me w/ proper maintenance. Speaking of which - You mention this bike is pretty well maintained - do you say that because the owner kept a good set of maintenance records, or because the bike still looks good? At 37K I would want to see records for routine oil changes, etc that would at least give some assurance the bike will go another 37K. Plus you should be able to negotiate a lower price because of the mileage. Good luck! |
High mileage is not an issue for these bikes as long as they have proper maintenance. But, I also would not pay the same amount for a bike that had 30k on as one that has 5k on it. I wouldn't be afraid of buying a bike just because of the miles, but I would certainly use that to get a better deal.
I've seen plenty of these bikes go over the 100k mark without any issues. |
Thanks for the help guys! I bought the bike and just got it last night, I've only put on about 20 miles but so far i like it alot over my 600. The lower end power is outragous compared to my f4i or my friends r1!

Mines got "a few" miles on it, lol..... if it's been well maintained and wasn't owned by a total twat that starts it up cold and bangs it off the rev limited within 0.000001 seconds after starting up, 37k is nothing. May need a valve adjustment if it hasn't been done yet, but that's just regular maintenance you've gotta do that to any bike. They will certainly last though.... I wouldn't have any worries at all even with planning on keeping it a long long time
FWIW my F4i just turned 242,000 miles the other day and still runs like brand new.... doing our 4th trackday this coming monday =) |
