Fuel Tank Recall - Has anyone replaced it themselves?
The local dealership won't let me bring in my old tank and swap it out for anew one. They must impound the bike until they either determine it's OK or they order a new tank and replace it. They said every dealership handles it this way, no exceptions.
It seems to me there have been exceptions, has anyone here been able to get a new tank under warrenty and replace it themselves?

if it is for the unwelded line on the 06-07's i have been told the dealer has to do it so they can have the tank at all times to verify conditions. And not all bikes in the VIN line have the problem and they dont want to replace a tank thats not needed.

Then deal with a messed up tank or replace it to be safe. I know people have bad stories about dealerships but it is a pretty dumb attitude to have when your saftey could be involved. I was escorting a buddy to the dealer when his lit up in the parking lot, only had 180 miles on it. But he did get a new one no questions asked.

Here is what they did at the dealership with my friends new 07. They take your bike to the back and hook up an air line to the fuel tank and put a little pressure in it to see if it is leaking around the seams. If it is they give you a brand new fuel tank and replace the fuel in the tank. If there is no problem you go home. This is not something that you can do at home yourself if you want to keep the warenty on your bike. The whole process takes about an hour.
