If thats the only thing wrong with the engine, I would certainly try to weld it. Its not an integral part of the engine, so strength of the weld won't be an issue, it just has to not leak.

having said that, I would cut the broken piece out of the engine, making it nice and square instead of jagged. Then, get a piece of aluminum and shape it to fit. There really shouldnt be too big of deal to weld the outside of the new piece of aluminum to the case. As long as the piece of aluminum you use is the same aluminum alloy mix, you should be ok. It looks like you will loose a bolt hole though. That might be an area that will develop a leak.

Take it to a certified welder. The welder will know more about what aluminum to use and how to clean it properly so the weld doesnt get contaminated. If it were me, I'd use a TIG welder and only put enough heat in to weld it. Although, the case is a big part, and aluminum will suck up the heat rather quick, a MIG may be a better option here. But again, any certified welder will be able to asses the situation first hand.

thing with welding aluminum ..it gets very hot very fast ......plus once its welded it will need to be remachined......case splitting would be a must....or you're looking at a serious engine fire if the oil residue catches...at the very least. I have repaired these kinds of things. fairly simple and str8 forward if you know how to weld aluminum. it can be tricky. the case need to be severely cleaned ....the oil does impregnant the aluminum and will smoke badly and give a poor weld unless cleaned very well.

Do not do that.......
You will need a TIG welder to do the job 'right'
Just from looking at the picture, you will need to machine a peace of aluminum on a mill to the right dimensions, and then try to weld.

You should really look into a new engine.

it's better safe than sorry.
