Buy the proper lubrication let it sink in and rotate the chain for a couple of days. Once the oil/lub/grease has soaked in, get a rag and clean it off the excess or it will get everywhere. I think your supposed to take it off and soak it (so I here but I've never done it).

Spray some lube on it, let it dry about an hour and keep riding. If its nasty clean it with some kerosene or wd40.

Do not use WD40 on your chain. It can be harmful to the O-rings. Honda recommends kerosene to clean with a brush to clean and a chain lube that does not degrade O-rings. Your lube can be a spray on. My lube came with instructions to clean (with kerosene), ride to warm up, spray on, move the bike, spray some more, move the bike, spray some more, and wipe the excess. You are moving the bike to gain access to different parts of the chain you have not lubed yet. You will have splatter in most cases. Best thing to do is to wipe the fling off at a later time. FOLLOW THE MANUAL'S RECOMENDATION. If you do not have a manual, check under general tech for a service manual to tell you how to do do it properly. A chain costs over $100 and the proper lube and some kerosene (and even the brush) will not run you more than $30. Extend your chain life and follow proper procedure.

Its a regular debate about the wd40. I have always used it on every bike and have never had a single problem as have many others .

Simple Green now comes in a foaming aerosol can! I bought some at Wal-Mart and I love it.

Reminder: never let any degreaser sit on your tires - always wash it off thouroughly

Grunge Brush works good to scrub all sides of the chain with a degreaser.
Rinse off real good and lube up.
+1 on taking a quick spin to heat up the chain.
Rear stand helps alot also.

Oh, and also watch the booger hooks.
