Hey guys,

Firstly, awesome community.

I've lurked around numerous times looking for issues when servicing the bike my bike, so thanks for that!

Hopefully looking for some pointers before I go ahead start troubleshooting this issue this weekend, hopefully saving some time.

Here is a short clip of the (really) loud clanking sounds when starting the bike.

They happen repeatedly on cold start, unless the engine is lucky enough to crank over and start.
As the bike heats up, the issues increasingly go away when turning off and starting again, and when at operating temp, it starts instantly once the ignition is engaged.

The bike's battery is fully charged and relatively new (5 months) - haven't tested the solenoid or starter motor yet.

Any insight or experience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for your help, much appreciated.

My father and I fixed it yesterday, so I wanted to come back and leave a reference for anyone else that has the issue.

The clanking loud clanking was coming from the engine body right side - engine wasn't cranking over though, so it had to be between the starter and the body.
We hooked up the starter directly to a battery, and it ran without any issue - so the starter circuit/starter wasn't the issue.

Our next bet was the starter clutch.

So we opened the crank case and removed the starter clutch assembly.
We removed the needle bearing from the starter driven gear.
Removed the snap ring on the one-way clutch get it out and inspect it.

And then after some troubleshooting we found the issue - 3 of the one-way clutch rollers were in the wrong direction.
Each of the rollers has a vertical line to mark it's direction, and 3 were out of sync with the others.

We took off the spring from the one-way clutch and corrected the direction of the 3 rollers.
Remounted the assembly, closed up the crankcase, and it started instantly without issue.

Mind blown.
