What kind of exhaust is it? regardless of what exhaust it is, the bike should be able to run without a power commander. People will always recommend it for optimal efficiency from the bike though. Thats about all I can tell you, let me know if you figure out what the problem is I am curious now.

maybe something to do with you idle speed or fuel injectors?

I've never heard of an exhaust prevent a bike from running. It sounds like the shop may have disconnected something if it won't stay running.

Is there a code being thrown?

Is it a slip-on or full exhaust?

what year bike and what exhaust?

As said, most companies will suggest a power commander, but its really not needed for 99 percent of exhaust out there. If you put on a full and have no backpressure at all, a power commander may be needed. However, it would never be enough to stop the bike from running. You could run an open header and the bike will still run.

Something else is going on.

it would idle, but if I gave it any throttle it would want to shut off.

its a full race exhaust. arrow parts is the name if I remember right.
after the power commander was installed, it has been running fine.

I believe it was just dirtied and gunked up injectors but I guess not. whatever.

Why fit a full race exhaust with out a power commander? The reson to fit the exhaust in the first place is to gain more power and a smoother delivery of power. You cant just bolt on an exhaust and expect the engine to deal with it.
