which gas is best for my honda? dosent the owner manual say 91 or greater for the 2006 honda?

and my LS2 corvette motor also says to use 91 or greater. can i get away with going less than that? also the GM site says that for max performance (410hp) you need to use the 91.

but in other threads i read here it was saying that a higher octane gas will lower performance in some cases.....

so whats the low down guys?

All I know is that if I go lower than 91 in my '05 CBR1000RR or the Super Charged Cobra that I use to have, the valves will rattle. Someone will be here shortly with a LONG explanation.LOL

 

I had the same question, My first fill up was the cheap 89% gas, I now get the 92%. I havent noticed a difference, but the manua states 91 or better.

 

There are some websites out there that promote sticking with regular octane, such as http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/autos/octane.htm I think that as long as your engine isn't "knocking" you should be alright with what you are using. If it is knocking, use the next highest octane gasoline.

highest octane i use is 91 says it on the tank

 

all octane rating is its resistance to pre-detotnation. with that said higher performance vehicles need higher octane fuels to resist knocking and pinging which is not good for a vehicle. honda civics and some other 4 bangers can run just fine on 87 due to its lower compression motors.

 

In a sense higher octane runs cooler on engines with high compression.

 

well sort of, the engine will run cooler because its not fighting with pre-detonation, when an engine pre-detonates it is burning emulsified gas and air under compression rather than spark so when the piston reaches half way or a little more the 87 octane gas you put in may not be stable enough to resist that compression. this is the reason you do not want to run octane lower than recomended. it may not happen all the time but you should definitely run the proper octane level.

 

+1, That was beautiful. I run diesel in my bike. LOL!!!!! My tech teacher always told me K.I.S.S. Higher compression, higher octane. Don't be cheap because it will cost you more in the long run. 91-93 octane at about 35-40 miles a gallon who cares about a "few" bucks here and there. A whole 25 cent difference between 87 and 93 is sad reson to rebuild an engine. Replacing rings aren't cheap!!!!
By the way gas isn't free in N.Y. I'm not rich, but $3.41 for 93 is well worth the price for fun and once your out it makes it easy to forget how much it cost.
