2004 CBR1000 or 2003 CBR954
Guys could use some advice here. I just sold my F4 after owning it for 6 years and well feel like ive earned the right to upgrade. So im debating between these two models and wondering if its worth paying the extra 1500 or so for the 2004 as the 2003's seem to go for a lot less. Thanks for any input, Cal

RE: 2004 CBR1000 or 2003 CBR954
i owned both the 954 and my new 06....
i would def take the 954 over the 04/05 cbr1000rr.
i was not impressed with that model. i had my 954 at 149hp, which is pretty much exactly what the 04/05 cbr makes....
granted i had $3500 put into my 954 (full system, pcIII, Ram air, custom map)....
so for me, there was no reason...and i think the 954 handeled better....
my 06 came in at 151.3 hp stock...
lastly stock for stock....i would still take the 954
my 2cents,
james

RE: 2004 CBR1000 or 2003 CBR954
Until June, '06 I owned a 2002 954rr. Loved it -- the handling mostly, but also the kick-in-the-seat feeling of acceleration, etc. Then a deer took that away.
I test rode an '04 1000rr. It was nice, but not the same feeling. The power and suspension are smoother so it's deceptive. You get going fast quickly, but it doesn't feel like it. But the turn-in didn't seem as quick.
I bought an '06 1000rr. It had more kick than the '04 since it's a few lbs lighter with a few more HP. The handling seems better than the '04 also.
The 1000rr pegs and seat are 1" higher than on the 954rr, but you sit 1" forward. The leg position is a little tighter. The ride on the 1000rr is smoother; especially over 130mph.
I had the suspension on the 954 where I liked it. Of the three it seemed to handle the best. I haven't gotten the '06 suspension where I want it, plus it's still new (well, 2500 miles in two months including a trip to Deal's Gap) so I still baby it some and don't push as hard. But comparing the first 2500 miles on both bikes, I'm at the same spot on the new-bike-learning-curve now as I was then. I believe the '06 will be comparable in flickability.
I'm glad I skipped the '04-'05 model. Not that it's a bad bike, but the '06 is more fun. But I also wouldn't have made the switch from the bike I had if it weren't for the deer. It was a lot of fun, too.
I don't think you can go wrong with either bike. It's just a matter of how much you want to spend.
