Default 2004-1000RR Mfr recommended gas octane

Please no flame wars. I'm only interested in finding out what Honda publishes in the book for the bike's fuel requirements. Trying to offer info to a buddy that BLEW a Honda motor with 2000 on the odo.

I am pretty sure that it recommends "premium" which I think by definition is anything 91+. It may have a specific number in there which would probably be 91 or 92 because they don't have anything higher in most overseas countries. Using 93 or 94 out of the pump wont really do anything, but anything considerably higher or lower than recommended can cause damage. If he "blew" his motor, he may have been using too low of octane causing a faster flash or detonation. Performance would decrease gradually with higher octane, but to blow the motor would take some serious boosters since you would have to slow the flash down to the point of burning past BDC with the valves closed. I am not sure the valve timing or if a high enough octane could even be achieved to accomplish that.

Anyway, I think it says "premium" LOL

Yep...

"premium unleaded gasoline, pump octane number 91 or higher"
This is straight from my 06 1000RR owner's manual

Side note- if he only had 2000 miles on it, then I would think that it is less than a year old and it should be covered by warrenty unless he is at fault.

Bought it used. He believes that it was sold to him with break-in oil still in the engine. Honda rep came out and said not covered because of the metal shavings inside.

Regarding gas: He uses premium, but he beats the hell out it. I use 87 in my ride. No performance increase only heat increase with higher octanes. And when I use higher octanes, I've noticed that my #4 spark plug cap pushes out of the cylinder.
