'06 1000RR Oil Change ?'s
Hello all,
Newbie here to the site, so please bear with me... I did a bit or searching on the matter, but have seen no clear-cut response as to what is recommened by others on this site with regard to an oil/filter change. In looking through the bike's manual I see they recommend the following oil:
"Pro Honda GN4 4-Stroke oil" at SAE 10W-30 weight
I just wanted to get a few more opinions as to the best filter / oil combination to use. I have seen a number of members like the Mobil M1-110 filter, but many have listed oils with varying weights. Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks,
JC

dude you just opened up a huge can of worms
get ready for everyone and their brother to tell you everything from stick with oem to pour in wesson oil with a hint of cinnamon
some people say to wait thousands of miles before you switch to anything other than honda gn4. others will say that it is ok the day you get it home
some truths
the mobil filter will fit
but since it is a car filter it will void your warranty if the dealer sees it
oil weight is based on air temp
10w30 is a little low for hot weather like here in tx
go to 1000rr.net and look for posts by a guy named scootr
he tests motorcycle oil for a living so he does have a little credibility
his research and verifiable tests (not some guys opinion that he overheard somewhere else) show that some of the bests oils are the heavier synths
for example for the longest time he recommended shell rotella 15w50 for diesels said it was identical to motorcycle oil in all testing
then he switched to repsol
but please go look and make your own mind up
me personally i use K&N filters because all the reviews i have read by independent testers say it is a good filter with a nut for safety wiring
and repsol 10w50
i am going to try the mobile 1 gold cap EP nex time though

I use 10w-30 Honda HP4 (semi synthetic, without moly of course) and the Honda oil filter.
You can also go with 10w-40, and some even run the 10w-50
Stick with GN4 (non synthetic) for about 1000 miles, then switch to semi-synthetic or full synthetic if you want.
Key point is to make sure it DOES NOT have moly in it andNOT labeled as "energy conserving" as it will cause your clutch plates to slip.

+1 on the regular honda oil and filter.I like to change my oil & filter every 1500 miles. So i get the least expensive ones so i can do them often.

do yourself a favor and send that oil out to be tested.
you will find that after 1500 miles even the worst oil is still just as good as it was when it was put in
i have seen tests on repsol synth showing that even after 5K miles the bike didnt need an oil change
