I got the Honda tool from Bike Bandit.com. Quite a reasonable price. Its advantage is its hollow so the allen key fits inside it to turn the adjuster. I woudn't like to attempt the job without it (and I managed to mess it up even with the correct tool [:@]). I tightenened the locknuts back up by 'feel' and then checked the torque with a deep socket and torque wrench.

The cam cover gasket on my '95 was like new so no need to replace. As you say, I'd expect yours to be similar.

thanks David. I've been looking out for one of those wrenches fora while now. It's all very well having the proper Honda shop manual (+ Haynes), both of which I've read back to front pretty much, but you can't beat talking to people who have actually done the work before.

Hope you got yours sorted mate!

Cheers

I have the Honda tool (Honda part number 07gma-ml70120, Bike Bandit part number 3822213-001). Cost US$23.47 and shipped from the States to me (UK) in under a week.

Just wanted to say thanks for those who offered ideas and advice. I've now done the valve clearances and the bike is running smoother and quieter than ever before. For those who are contemplating the job and are a bit worried, it's actually quite easy if you take your time
