I was starting a valve clearance adjustment the other day on my 87. And every manual I looked at and every post I read said I would need a hex wrench for adjusting. I have the honda tool and the hex wrench. Bud when opened it up to start, all the valve adjustment screws were not the hex but rather flathead screwdriver. My question is does anybody else have valve adjustment screws that use a flathead screwdriver as opposed to the hex. Like did half of them come with the flathead screw and the other half with the hex, or if not why would those be in there. Could it mean a rebuild in the past.

When I had my Honda CB650 (vintage 1980) is used a flat bade for adjustment and my 94 uses a 3mm hex. I think Honda switched to reduce the chance of stipping the adjusters.

If you have 2 different sets on the same bike, somebody been in there before you.

 

No they are all the same....they are just all the flat blade adjustment...it was just that everything I looked at for my year was calling out the hex wrench...I guess I wont worry about it too much.

Check earlier posts on valve lash and cam chain replacement, some came with flatheads, others with hex heads.

 

The older models used flat blade screwdrivers, the newer ones use hex to give the home mechanic a challenge.
