Default Too much rattle...new engine?

ive had my 88 for just over 7months now. sad to most of you but its unfaired and quite alot diferent though.
although my problem is the engine. its always had a ratttle when cold but has become more now all the time at idle and hot n cold. when i give the bkie a long thrash for a while the rattle does seem to go quiet is im lucky.
anyways ive had a well rep'd mechanic have a look who knows these engines. he checked the cam chain, cam chain adjuster, valves and says its completly quiet there, used a engine stephascope and says its coming form the generator drive tensioner inside the engine. he can do the work but says needs engine splitting etc so is a cost. could this chain be true? and heard of playing up tensioners? my options are pay the repair bills or engine swap! if engine swao wot enigine can i just bolt straight in as dont seem to be many 88 complete engines around.
many thanks in advance for reading and ur replys.

He may well be right

but says needs engine splitting etc so is a cost. could this chain be true?
Can't do the primary chain without splitting the engine. Correct.
and heard of playing up tensioners?
Yes - my 90 has a rattle from the primary chain. The tensioner goes and the chain rattles mostly when cold.

Advice:
Just ride the thing !

It will be cheaper for you to buy another engine. The parts to fix your current one will cost as much as you paid for your whole bike.
Go to www.mrcycles.com and price all the parts and you'll see.
