I really surprised a 160 will fit on a 87/88 as there is very little room up the front of the swing arm. I can hardly get my fingers between the edge of the tyre and the swing arm and thats with a 140!!!

For the Gt 501 Dunlops in stock size. 250kms in and I'm a happy camper! Great on cold roads, riding mostly between 3-10 Celsius.

My bike came with a 160 rear but i didn't pay much attention to the profile just the fact that it fit. I had the Q2 160 mounted today and am not happy with the profile at all. I will have to post a pic but I think Dragon was right, it fits but is to squeezed and has no shoulder if that makes sense.

I've just ordered a sc24 5.5 rim and a Metzeler 180/55/17 tyre which I'll be fitting to my '88. So far I've cut the 'mudguard' part of the hugger off and now have the chainguard and torque arm covers in situ. With a spacer bracing strap it looks like they will clear the tyre.
I'll need to move the torque arm outwards by 20mm or so. The tyre should have 10mm clearance from the chainguard.
Probably take some pics.

The 180 will clear the original swingarm - it has plenty of room either side and to the front.

With the wheel off I'll also be shortening the dog bone to give some extra ride height.

Baron,

I have made a post on how to put widwer wheels, but maybe you don't want to modify the dogbone, it was made like that and been calculated for relibility the way it is. If you modify you maybe be getting failure due to metal fatigue induce by the modification.

Q2 by Dunlop are radial tires. I have a 1990 and am runnin F: 120/70/17 R: 180/55/17. I don't have any issues and will continue using this tire/size combination. I don't think the 1990 and the 1987 are running the same size wheels. Someone told me that, if you go up more and 1 size, tire deformation becomes a problem. Sorry if this is not much help to you.

Ekelman is correct. You can fit a 160 but the profile is wrong

Hello there Dragon,

yes, I've drilled the holes to take the mod but I'm not too happy with the amount of metal top and bottom of the new hole - I've ordered a replacement dog bone which I'll be reinforcing before drilling to replace the original.
it takes about 30mins to remove the dog, and there's no need to remove the exhaust or mufflers, access is ok.
when I've fitted the wheel I'll measure up the lift just for interested parties.

thanks for the advisory.
