Default Sump Pan Off.... What Now

I finally started work on the bike, it has taken nealry 3 months to get going, I still have panels off being repaired, but today I removed the sump pan because the gasket was leaking.

Is there anything I should look for while it is off and how do I remove the old gasket

Thanks Guys

Remove the old gasket with something softer than the metal it's made of , you don't want scratches or gouges .

If you've got a really old blunt flat blade screwdriver or scraper use that but carefully.

If it's leaking because the sump pan is already scratched , you can put a large sheet of fine sandpaper on a flat surface and put the sump pan upside down on it and gently rub the scratches out , but do it evenly , you don't want a wobbly edge either (hence the flat surface).

Thanks hawkwind,

It looks like a very long job to remove the old gasket, i even tried soaking the sump in a bucket of water for a few hours and it did nothing.

I should have asked in the first post does anyone know the torque values for the sump bolts?

Thanks again

Try using petrol to remove the old sump gasket..................water won't move it at all !

Yep, water won't do anything for you. You'll probably have to take it off manually with a scraper and a little aid from a solvent. It's a bit of a task, but not too bad. Like hawk said, though, you don't want to gouge the pan or the block in doing so.
I would also wipe the pan out as good as you can of any little bits if there are any, and let the pan dry really well from the water you have in it (from the bucket thing). You don't want to have water in your oil.
As far as other stuff to check, I can't really think of anything offhand.

About the only thing I can think of is to check the oil strainer. They tend to block up with all sorts of debris.

That's what I was thinking, too, blue... Check up on the oil pickup and clean any debris you might find, etc...
I mean, there are other things you could do, I suppose, but probably end up doing more harm than good?
If it aint broke....
