Starting/Battery issue

So the other day the bike stalled out on me. When I pulled over to a safe spot it would not turn over. After 2 tries I could tell the batt was low. My wife came, gave it a jump rode it home. Later that night it started and rode just fine. Put battery tender on it anyway. A few days later I go to start it up and its dead again. Swapped batteries from the other CBR and same thing. Both batteries read fully charged on a tester, but I cant start without a jump. Its like they are not making enough power. The batteries are less than 2 months old and the temp is around 50-70 f.

Clean ground to frame and pos terminal points

Could be the relay, test and see first though. You should also give the regulator and stator a check per the fsm. Honda was notorious for bad charging systems. I recently replaced mine and have had to do so on past Hondas.

well my meter is crap... so I just swapped out the switch and regulator from the bike thats waiting for the motor swap. When I went to check the regulator, I noticed that the owner before me had fitted a fan over it to draw the warm air away. Any thing you guys can think off that would cause enough heat for them to go through the trouble?

Cleaned all ground connections knew of and swapped starter relay, rectifier, and alternator cover/stator coil. Still having issue. I plan to get a new meter when I get paid. Will start and run lights a seems to charge the battery. I only have an issue after longer ride.

The Honda OEM rectifier will get very hot, most after market rectifiers will have some type of heat sink to get around this. Bit of a design flaw on Mr Hondas part. The fan will just be the previous owner making doubly sure it wont overheat.

i had exactly the same thing on mine. even put a new battery on. i ran an earth lead from one of the starter motor mounting bolts direct to the negative terminal on the battery. instant cure. talking to a mate, and apparently this is standard wiring set-up on honda shadows, goldwings and F6C's?

mrniceguy 11-09-2013 10:04 PM

I will try that tomorrow. Thanks!

well I'll be.... That fixed it. Well it did for a bit, till the fan came on. After that same condition. Going to shell out for a better meter recheck the stator and the wiring to the fan. Its after market.
