Starter sprague? dampener? how do I narrow my problem down?

I have a 91 that recently turned off on me at a stoplight and I have only been able to get started once since briefly before it shut off again. He's the backstory so you can get a better picture. I bought a used cbr1000 a few months ago and didnt have any issues with it. When it turned off on me, I first checked the battery and oil (which was pretty low), changed the filter and put new oil. It started and ran for a few mins but eventually died out. Now it makes an aweful screeching noise when hitting the start button. I found a youtube
that has the exact same sound when hitting the start button. In that case, it turned out to be the starter dampener clutch. My question is how do I check this to see if this is indeed my prblem, or is there another more logical approach to narrow down my issue?

If that is the sound it is the starter clutch/alternator damper assembly.

Start reading here and post up any questions you have.

Photobucket's greed has ensured all photos have disappeared so I will try and find the original and relink.

+1 on what Seb said.

Also a quick test is to see if the bike will 'bump' start. If it bump starts no problem, then that points to the starter clutch, if it won't start on a bump, then it might be something else.

I looked thru the post by SB, but the link for Stus "Replacing the alternator damper on your CBR1000F Honda motorcycle" was dead.I read through the other links, but I believe that those would be for later steps. Imma see if I can find a working link or writeup anywhere online, but Im still kinda stuck
