Standard engine rebuild
I went to see a mechanic about my bike this morning.
I've beenof two minds...sell the '95 knowing it's old and tired and in need of work and buy a new bike with EFI and other modern goodiesor get the motor rebuilt so that I can have annother 120,000 glorious k's out of it... foraLOT less$'s...
I was leaning towards trading but after talking to this mechanic, I'm going to go for arebuild... He wants me to give him the engine only... no carbs or anything else. While I've got the engine out, I'm going to replace the swingarm and steering bearings and check overthe restas best I can.
He said he'd give me back the engine ready to be reinstalled and then I'll have to go get it tuned. Sounds like a fair plan to me.
While I was there, I sawaproject drag bike he's been working on for a few years that is getting close to being let loose on the track.Apparently theengine is pretty unique in that instead of having valves and cams, the intake and outtake against the cylindersroll like a drum.
It's also got aclutchwhere the oil pressure that engages the clutch goes through an orifice that can be made bigger or smaller at the twist of a ****. If the orifice is large, then lots of oil can pass though and the clutch engages quickly,if the orifice is small, then the oil flow is slower and the clutch engages slower.
And there's this massive nylon looking strip that wraps around the drive chain between the sprockets so that if the chain snaps, it's funnelled out the back of the bike instead of lopping off a leg...
Anyways, he's going to track down some parts prices for me, oncethe engine is apart, we'll know whatneeds to be done. I'm looking forward to finding out how these bikes rode when they were new! Hopefully mine will be as good as new.
Anyways, I'll take photos of the bike as it comes apart and as it goes back together... should be interesting... I'm sure I'll have questionsas I go!
