Default Sick bike

I just got an 87 1000f It has set up for a year or so. I have removed the carbs and cleaned them. Not a complete rebuild but A pretty thorough cleaning. I could only get one jet out per carb. Didn't want to force the others. I don't have the right tools to do the other jets, I guess. Now it will rev if I get it past the 1st 1/8 of a turn before it dies. And I cannot disengage the choke without killing it. Any ideas on what might be going on? I also replaced the plugs. I am running it for 5 or so min and letting it rest then again to get some RXP through her system.
Thanks
Patrick

The carbs have to be cleaned from top to bottom. Each carb must be cleaned individually, as you don't want to mix parts. Every jet, every air bleed, and each diaphram/piston have to be cleaned with spray cleaner. You should use a manual to disassemble and assemble the carbs. If you can't afford a manual, the downloaded manual for early 600's has the same carb as the 1000 except for jets and sizes. The idle jets for sure are clogged, and the piston/diaphrams are probably sticking.

Thanks slow. I have ordered the Haynes manual. I am an impatient person though. Are there any tools that I will need when it arrives. Some of those jets are round no place to grip. Guess that is why the manual is so handy. I will try the downloadable 600 manual. Thanks for the advice.

Impatience isn't a good virtue when working on carbs. Everything is pot metal, aluminum, or brass. You will need a good screwdriver with a wide, flat blade, a machinist's steel rule for float measurement, tweezers for pulling out the hinge pin of the float, and a very good phillips-head screwdriver for taking off the 16 screws holding down the top cover. You will also need a small vice-grips for taking off the phillips-head screws that strip. At least one or two will round off the heads. One or two cans of carb spray cleaner. Wear gloves and eye protection. Vasoline to install the diaphram lip into the groove. And a mercury carb stick to synch the carbs after cleaning.
