No. You are just doing it wrong.

Hay! That's a good question...why won't the seat fit?
87hcane, is that the same seat that you took off of the bike? If it is it should go back on.
Did you crash the bike?
I don't know why it will not fit.
They have a stiff plastic pan. I doubt it is bent.
As far as the bike goes, the rail is bolted to the bike frame. I doubt they are bent unless the bike is real messed up.
To install the seat you first have to get the tab on the seat under the catch below the fuel tank hinge.
Then you have to letch the seat. The best way is to look under the seat and see if the seat hoop is making it's way to the seat locking mechanism.
Let us know how you make out.

Hey, TBT, what the heck is "letch"? Remember you are communicating with a world wide audience here! I've never heard that term before. Does it mean slide?

RE: seat wont fit subframe bent?
I have an '87.
I often have trouble getting the back part of my seat in place. The two plastic bits that stick out under the bottom of the seat pan usually get hung up on the two plastic body pieces on each side. I often have to pull the body piece out a very small amount (1-2 mm) to get the two plastic bits inside, then it slides into place no problem.
And I've never wanted to letch my bike. Letch my wife on my bike, well, that's a different story...
