If they are putting ethanol in the fuel in OZ, you may be a victim of crappy fuel. That stuff burns slow and not fully. You smell it at idle sometimes (not the old familiar gas smell but ethanol smell). It also leaves black residue in the tail pipe.

I cleaned my tail pipe, filled the tank and added some Seafoam to the tank before going for a long ride. Half way into the ride I had to fill up. As I was filling up I noticed that my tail pipe was still clean. As I emptied the second tank my tail pipe started to turn brownish with ethanol residue. That's how crappy that stuff is. You need to run cleaner all the time. It does not burn clean and fully.

Try adding some Seafoam and running that gas out of the tank.
I have had my bike load up like a 2-stroke when leaving stop signs. It will spit and sputter and fall on it's face. It also backfires sometimes. A little Seafome and it runs great again. That ethanol is crap.

I forgot to add, I balanced a friends carbs and the next day he stopped by and claimed that his bike was all screwed up. I could tell by the way the bike was falling on it's face that it was bad gas. He found a new place to buy fuel and he called me to tell me that the bike was running great.

I got some chit gas a few weeks ago in my jeep. It was sputtering and backfiring and generally running like crap for almost a week. Next fill up and it stopped within a couple miles and hasn't done it since. It's the only explanation I can come up with. It acted like a bad O2 sensor or something, but I had just put a new bosch sensor in a few months ago.

Rob, seafoam is a type of fuel system cleaner/stabilizer over here. The stuff works pretty good.
I don't think your plan is a bad one, either.
