Removing a stuck engine mount
So I've carried on stripping down my bike, it's now bascially down to the engine, frame and wiring loom (because I can't fit the plugs through the gap between the starter & frame without getting the engine out).
I've loosened the spacer on the top rear mount, and gotten all the engine mounts out except for the front lower left, which is totally stuck. I tried heat with tonnes of penetrating oil and got nowhere. I then got a breaker bar, which simply broke the head off the bolt. The nut is off, the engine even pivots a few degrees on it, but I'm buggered if I can get the mount to shift at all to let me drop the engine out of the frame. I've put a bolt against it and whacked it hard but didn't budge. Drilled down the middle ot weaken it but it still remains solid. I'd just cut it between the frame and engine but there's not enough of a gap to get a hacksaw blade in there. With the lot on it's side, I'm confused as so how the engine is happy to turn on the mount but won't drop down away from the frame. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/cbrforu...0cf4a98877.jpg The cause of many woes. I finally got this bugger sorted out yesterday. After putting it back on it's side so the engine was hanging from the mount, I rocked the engine back and forth quickly for a few minutes (yes, it was exhausting). That moved it down a couple of mm, enough for me to get a hacksaw in and cut through the bolt. Of course I still have to get it out of the block, but that's a challenge for another day.

Well done persevering to cut through the bolt, once rusted it is a devils own job to get them out, had the same issue on my old CB500 which was an absolute pain.

Going to take a couple of weeks before doing anything else with it, mostly because the space I cleared by piling it all up at the side of the garage will be used for another bike :)
Reckon I'll start a build thread soon though, first step will be getting that mount out of the block along with two completely stuck exhaust studs, from there it'll be clean-up and reassembly. The bike was in un unknown condiditon when I go it, and the water pump was a horror show when I took it off, so fingers crossed there's no major issues. |
