Default Regulator/Rectifier

Got a small problem. When the Light is put on, the battery drains and eventually cuts out the bike. The bike is fine with the lights off. Is it the rectifier and more importantly, can any japanese rectifier do the job? I have read the previous posts where an R1 rectifier was mentioned. Found a cheap as hell one on FleaBay taken from a 99 XJ 600 Diversion. It looks identical to the R1.

Thanks in advance guys.

Before you try the r/r. What is the input charge from the alternator to the battery if any?

I have no idea, the guy that bought it broke down 75 miles from his house so I am trying to solve it for him which is tricky through email. I never had this problem when I had the bike but I never rode it at night. It only conks out when the lights are on. Its fine without. I sent him an email telling him to come onto this forum and look at the alternator/regulator checks.

Thats no fun jb. The best bit is learning about the bike, ways to cut corners etc etc

I also read somewhere the standard Honda RR is bad.

Thought I would put my 2 cents in on this one. I just went through this problemn w/my 90'. The shop got me a "aftermarket" for 109.95 in stead of the 210.00 Honda part. I THINK others (ex. 87' Hurricane is different from mine but had the same wires just not the same harness) will"work" from my investigation but you will have to cut and splice wires. I didn't want to take a chance.

From what I can gather, all Japanese R/R should conform to the same standard. They do exactly the same job as each other. Some have cooling fins, some dont. All they should differ in, is exterior design. I work on the Mech side so I rarely dabble in the Electrical field so I may be way off.

The CBR 1000 F R/R is different than most otherR/R forJapanese bikes. It has not only the common three connections to the stator, it has two more connections to the alternators fourth winding. I don’t know what the 4thwinding really is for though. Perhaps anyone do and can explain the function of the fourth winding and if itmust be connected or not.

I found it quite disturbing that I don't know if there is a work-around so a conventional R/R can be used. Especially since I have worked a lot with electronics. I'lllook around for information and see if the fog will clear.

i spent 2 months trying to shortcut the problem ( take a look back at the threads started by me and u will see) in the end new alt and RR, now maybe ...maayybee, it was because before i bought my bike it was sitting for 2 whole years.. and apparently electronic items such as one's i have replaced DONT like that. the only other thing it can be is yr battery, trust me i know what i am talking about, but believe more on what R1000 says :P

The trouble with dealing with a possible r/r problem, is understanding how the elecrical system works. The mainearth for the wiring loom is to the rear of the sparker unit, but the r/r earth is also through the bolts that the r/r conects to the frame which take the extra voltage back to the battery. Now it could be something simple like a broken wire. This list of problems can seem endless, but your going to have to be patient and systematic, and use a checklist, this will be invaluable later on.

R1000, I not sure but believe that the 4th wire that you are talking about is part of the open curcuit for unused current that goes back to earth, but is also run through the cutoff switch and starter switch. For an old bike it sure has a complex wiring system.
