HI looking to change me back tyre on the old girl,currently on contis road attacks 180 on back but the manuel says should be 170 , with me bike being very heavy they do a c180 tyre made for bmw c meaing stronger tyre carcuss was wondering if bike would benefit from this or would handel better on 170 ??

 

170 or 180 will fit ,,,
i'm running a 120 front and 180 rear Qualifier,,

 

I don't think the 180 will fit on the 1987/88, possibly 89?
After 1990 you're good to go with a 180.

The 180 rear seems a little easier to get ahold of, and you have more choices in sport tires. I wouldn't think there would be a huge difference in handling. Maybe a little lighter with the 170.

 

I think FK was the first model on a 170 rear - Look at the rear wheel markings - It should say 5.5 - 17

I couldn't tell much difference between the 170 and the 180. A tiny bit slower to turn in if anything but this can be cured by raising the forks through the yokes by 4mm.

The 120/180 sets are generally easier to find - Conti Road attacks are pretty good - i ran them on my FL model.

No - you dont need a "C" rated tyre on the 1000F - that was introduced for the blackbird and other heavy bikes with 175mph+ top speeds.

If you like to lean there is one potential problem - At full lean when using the 180 on the rear you are very close to running out of front tyre tread area.

If you look at the attached pic 120/180 setup - you can see "chicken strip" on the rear tyre but the front has gone to the edge of the tread. Bike pushes like mad at full lean.

 

Im looking to 'upgrade' the tyres on my FJ at some point....I have no idea whats on them at the moment ( Been too busy to check, and only just getting back into biking after a 4 odd year gap!! )

Do you know what sizes of tyres will fit and any tried and tested makes you would suggest???

 

If I remember correctly the FJ was the last model wearing skinny tyres - SC21 model

So you have a 110/80 up front and a 140/80 at the rear.

The biggest upgrade would be to up the wheel width by fitting wheels from an FK or later model and use the tyres from the later model too.

Check out another thread and as I make it out, I can fit up to a 150 on the rear with out any issues...and will stick to a 110 on the front. Have been looking at Pirelli Sport Demons or Dialbo Strada's as my next tyres......will have to find out if these are any good..my collegue recommends the Diablos highly ( But I dont always believe him! ) lol

 

been running bike on 120/ 180s four sets of tyres used but not c type update i have now fitted the c rated tyre and just done 1500 miles around scotland with no problems with a newly fitted ohlins remote rear shock what a differance it makes to bike i love it!!

 

I have an '87 and I'm running a 110 on the front and a 150 on the rear. No problems experienced but I am switching to a 120 on the front because the 110 I have is way too hard (Battleaxe 45).

I never push to full lean so I don't know about the issue of running out of front tire tread with a wider rear.

Also, I have a Diablo Strada on the rear and I like it quite well, however, I'm finding the centre to be a bit "slick" or greasy feeling at times, particularly when breaking. If I don't rev match it locks for a second and skids. I've not had this happen with other tires so I'm suspecting the Strada.

I'll be switching to Metzeler M3's this week and will let you know if it solves the issue or if it's just my odd perceptions of reality kicking in again.
