Quieter camchain tensioner
Finally found out how to make the camchain tensioner quieter. Just follow carefully the following steps:
1. Lean the bike on to its sidestand, but with the sidestand up when you thought it was down. 2. Try to stop the bike from falling, but you can't, so let it fall gently to the ground (I was lucky this happened to me on the soft grass verge outside my house) 3. Pick up the bike, ride it on to the drive and park up for the night. 4. Once the bike's cooled, cover it with a tatty bike cover - OK it's an old car cover that's way too big and falling to pieces. 5. Next morning go out in the pi**ing rain to take the cover off the bike only to discover that the strong winds in the night have blown it off anyway. 6. Key in, ignition on, apply full choke. 7. Press the starter button. Ensure the engine does NOT fire up. 8. Make many more attempts to start, alternating choke and throttle etc. 9. On one attempt, let go of the starter button just as the engine was about to fire. 10. Curse the weather. 11. Keep trying and trying... until the battery dies. 12. Lift up the fuel tank and spray some WD-40 under there in case it's damp that's causing the problem (it rained all night). 13. Give the wife a filthy look when she pokes her head out of the front door and profoundly suggests you go to work by train. 14. Spend ten minutes trying to find some jump leads. 15. Remove the seat and battery cover. 16. Jump-start from the wife's car. 17. Ride off, ensuring that the engine is well flooded, one cylinder (at least) isn't firing and the bike is really sluggish and noisy. 18. Get on to the dual carriageway and accelerate painfully slowly to about 60mph in second gear. 19. Keep revving the bo**ocks off the poor thing for a couple of miles until the flooding is cured and the bike is back to its lively old self. 20. Drive into London, oblivious now to the rain and sleet as you are delighted that the engine feels smoother than ever and the camchain rattle is quieter than it has been for ages. Honest, it worked for me. |
can i borrow your jumper cables?

Lol!!!

OK , now I might be wrong here , but I have a theory . reading all the posts about the problems with CCT , alot of guys are saying that the rattle returns after relatively short kms . also that the CCT has to be "primed" before fitting . Is it possible that the oil in the CCT is wearing out as it does'nt drain when you drop the engine oil ? when your bike had a bit of a rest on its side , the old oil drained out , and was replaced eventually with fresh oil , thus allowing the tensioner to perform correctly ?? just a thought , probably wrong .

I'm pretty sure it's the spraying of the WD40 under the fuel tank that actually fixed the CCT - it's mighty powerful and often under-rated stuff.
"just a thought , probably wrong . " |
The wife fixed it by poking her head out the door... :icon_laugh:
At least she will take credit for it. :icon_blah: |
Iffen I had my druthers, I'druther just sync the carbs, which quietens the camchain noise too.
I can attest to the fact that laying the bike on it's side, even with the engine running doesn't help the camchain noise. This I know to be true  :) And I have first dubs on those jumpers :) |
The filthy look was still engaged when sight picture returned to the bike. Additionally it was set for kill at the full range to the front door, when set at that power and directed at the close range to the bike any number of mechanical malidies will purge themselves from the machine. Oh and for those that are newlyweds, wives have the ability to absorb and deflect the look at their option. Save it for the garage.

Another way to quiet the chain is to lift the tank, build a wooden frame around the head and pack it with mud. Lower the tank and walla!
Not as exciting however...... |
As I see it, there's a hidden upside to the whole cam chain tensioner problem. I used to be one of those impatient "fire it up and go" guys. Now I have to sit and wait for the bike to warm up and reach proper operating temp before riding. I could actually be prolonging the life of my engine
