Default Question re alternator damper plates

So here's the deal: I have a '90 CBR1000f with the typical slow crank/no start. I went down the regular path of checking stuff with help from all of you. I found this thread which is what leads me to believe my alternator damper is at fault.

My question: how can I be reasonably sure that the friction plates I go with will do any better? I have a parts bike and I pulled the alternator dampers off both bikes, they look identical when I pull the plates out. The author of the how-to suggests putting a 1-2 mm washer below the top disc spring which I am willing to do but it doesn't sound like a good long-term solution.

I would love to simply buy new friction plates the same as if I were to just go out and get new clutch plates but I can't find them anywhere. I can find the complete damper for $140 but that seems a bit unnecessary and spendy. Should I just shuffle the plates? Buy new? Go with a washer? I wonder if shuffling the plates alone helps the situation??

Not that the pic does any good but here is the one off the parts bike. The one off the runner is identical. If a different pic would help those a bit more in the know than myself I can upload one.

So am I making a big deal out of nothing? Shuffle plates, add a washer and go? Whatever I do I think I will use the damper off the parts bike, I can't spin the inner barrel on either unit but the one from the runner had a little more in'n'out motion than the other. It's guess work on my end but I hope it let's me start the bike up. (As soon as it gets over 10 degrees F here in Chicago!)

Should I take some super fine paper to the steel plates before re-assembling??

Shadow is the guy to speak to about this job. I remember he did it a while back, also Sebastion Bear. If they don't drop by with an answer soon I'd PM them.

Thanks hawk, I may try that. The more I read the more I think I should go with the original advise and use a washer. I can hope for the best and buy a new one if this doesn't last.

G'Day Drewski,

I have done the job as Hawkwind said and I took the option of replacing the whole alternator damper unit with a new one. Too much unknown with the old one for my liking since I had the whole shaft out (and didn't want to do it again).

I seemed to remember my new damper set me back about $90 USD, but just doing a quick search I found one for $94.62 at Powersports Plus

I also replaced all the bearings on the shaft as well - from memory there were three but looking at the diagram it suggests 2.

If you need any help, post here or PM me.

Cheers, SB

Hey thanks SB. Can't really argue w/ $90-something. I think I'll pick up a new one. I'll still throw this one on for the time being, it didn't take me long to get it off. I'll plan to replace it w/ new though.

Right now I just wanna ride this thing. I've had it for a month or so and haven't ridden it at ALL! I just can't wait, gotta get the darn thing started first.

Not a problem at all

Just remember to release the alternator chain tensioner pawl when refitting.

It will minimise swearing and skinned knuckles.............

I'll be doing this soon. Is this the tensioner pawl that is bent back up?
