Adam. I was so jealous I forgot to mention that you can still get (or could three years ago) new panels already painted in original colours. Mine took ages to come and I rang Honda many times to chase them up. Apparently they sub the work out but have very strict quality control. Since you got it for free it might be worth getting new bits, just quote the colour code on the sticker located on the frame under the seat. It wouldn't hurt to at least get a price. It'd look fan-bloody-tastic and if it's straight, and the motor hasn't suffered from not running, you've scored big time.

+1 on the oil down the plug holes and gently turn over. I'd be inclined to take off the top cover and drizzle a bit of oil on the cams too, before turning it over. No oil has been up there for a long time and some scoring could occur when you crank it..just like when you oil your camshaft after a re-build.

Keep us filled in on the progress and don't be surprised if your ears burn a bit as we all mutter "lucky (insert expletive)".

Indeed an awesome set of circumstances! Congrats! I'm just wondering who (even after laying it down) would just abandon such a beautiful sweet wonderful thing as a CBR!!?

I was wondering the same thing.
People do some weird chit sometimes....

Plus....through all the years it's been sitting there, nobody even thought about parting it out or fixing it up and selling it?? And then they just give it away? Someone had to pay good money for that bike at one point.
I guess some people just don't think like us...

Nice one man, i use a place called:

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/home/

All the stuff they have is mostly genuine Honda, they do original panels, which come all ready painted and have all the correct decals on for the year of your bike. They are also very reasonable priced.

Best of luck with resto, don't forget the pictures..

Hi Guys

I have a similar story. My brother has found for me an (undropped) '87 with only 32 000 km on it. Has been parked up with rego on hold since 2002. Would appear that there has been a divorce and a wicked step father in the loop somewhere!Needs a bit of cosmetic work but for the princely sum of NZ$300 it seemed like a good option to get me back on two wheels. Big resto over our winter ready to put back on the road September. Anyone got a good 87 seat?

Welcome, Kiwi!
$300 is pretty much free! Wow.. good deal.

I don't have a seat, but I'd put up a wanted ad in the "wanted" section and check on ebay.

The timing was perfect. My good lady wife and I had just returned from the F1 in Melbourne for our 25th wedding anniversary. On the way home thru duty free she dropped $400 odd on perfume. Couldn't really complain about $300 for a bike could she?

I can't find a "quiet smirk" smilie but that would be very appropriate.
