Default Oil Level & Cam Chain Tensioner?

Hi All,

If the oil level drops to low, will this cause the cam chain tensioner to become louder.

Say for example if the oil level is 1/2 on the dip stick will the rattle in the cam chain be louder

Hey:

It increases in noise with low oil or light oil weight for Wx conditions IE,.5W/20 in hot Wx 35C+, when it should be 20W/50 to be Optimal and help keep it quiet. 15W40 works well in colder Wx.

As mentioned, heavier oil will dampen the noise. It is important to use motorcycle oil or equivalent or the tranny will crush it and thin it out.

Thin oil will weep out of the CCT and cause some rattle at lower RPM. If the oil level is low, the chain may not pick up enough to fling on the CCT.

Oil level and quality makes a big difference.
It also isn't recommended to start the bike on the sidestand and let it idle - I find the oil doesn't fill the tensioner properly..................so more noise.

It is important to use motorcycle oil or equivalent or the tranny will crush it and thin it out.
That's why diesel oil is much better than car oil when used in a bike.....

Thanks all,

I had not heard about starting the bike on the side stand is not good.

Any way at least i do not need a louder exhaust system, i hace a good CCT rattle.

Time to replace real soon, soon as i stop riding long enough

Same here Johnno. I replaced mine at around 25k mi. I am now just under 50k mi and she is rattling again. It just takes longer for it to fill up before I can crank out some R's.

Hmm... tell me some more, I've read a small bit somewhere else, you just put in regular diesel engine oil and change it twice as often?
But why diesel oil... higher level of detergents I guess due to carbon/sludge building up in diesels, what is the 'secret'?

Greater molecular sheering resistance, not friction modified , more robust additive
package including as you rightly point out detergents ,made for high compression
rates........ never heard of having to change it twice as much though !
