Default Oil checking rules

Hi everyone,
I wanted to check the oil level on my 1000FH. I thought that to check the oil you unscrew the cap and then you dip to check the oil. I did that and it was below the second line. I screw it and then remove it and was nominal level. There is a considerable debate on this: Do we check the oil level with the cap screwed on unscrewed. Can someone throw some light on this issue? Thanks

When i change my oil i put 4L in it I think a little bit more is always better forea engine. Oil cools the engine more than water. I run it then check it justwhen it stops at dipstick at top of thread.

I was also told that the bike should be on the center stand when you check it too. Is that true or is it designed so that it can be checked on the side stand?

I think you need to check it on the center stand it would probably holdanother liter on the side stand.

U must check the oil on a center stand and with unscrewed dipstick. Before checking the oil level run the engine for 2 -3 minutes.

hello everyone.......
it seems i have a small dilemma....
IT REALLY MIGHT TURN OUT TO BE A LARGER PROBLEM BASED ON MY ANSWERS BACK.
i'm puting oil in my bike right.
changing the filter as well.

for some reason the oil is not reading in my mirror.(glass in which oil is visible through fairings )
maybe it was too full, right..... and i couldn't see the level because it surpassed the fullness.

i just dumped it out..... and it looks the same as when i had 3 (three) quarts in it.

what's going on???

1)not enough oil ???
2)just perfect, and just deal with the way the oil - screen looks.(glass)???
3)it's busted and leaking inside of the bike itself ??? [:@][][>:]
4)too much oil ???
5)glass is not registering ???

thanks for your time of day everyone!!!
