non starting and temp rising
Hi
Wonder if anyone can help me. Just got given a nice 1988 1000F but unfortunetaly its not starting. Previous owner sais it was working perfectly until he stripped it to the frame to rust proof it.
What it does is when You turn the ignition on the temp gauge rises almost instantly and its impossible to start the bike. You can hear startet motor turning fine and fuel is flowing, just seems that there is no spark. I thing there might be some problems with the grounding, hence temp gauge behaving odd, but I have no experince with bikes what so ever so somone maybe can direct me pls..
cheers
Raf

RE: non starting and temp rising
I'd say earthing should be your first stop - clean and refit all your earth connections (there are a number all over the frame) It sounds like your temp gauge is either not correctly earthed, or is shorting somehow - I've had plenty of electrical problems, but never a funny temp gauge...Your engine also needs to be earthed, to run it. If you need a diagram, let me know....
Battery must be in GOOD order - they'll sound fine and turn over, but if the battery's not showing at least 12.5 volts before attempting startup, she probably won't fire. There are plenty of posts like this on the Forum and many examples of what else could be wrong. Also, as Paco says, check the choke......

RE: non starting and temp rising
Thanks for quick answers guys
Choke - using it and works fine, linkage checked, all working
Battery - brand new, freshly charged.
As I though earthing, need to strip it down and check it all. Got Haynes manual so I should manage. Thanks very much, will post the outcome

Haynes is good - this one has different writeups: I use both

Hi, i had the same problem with my 88 cane. follow the wiring from the tank to the connector on the left side of bike. Cut the green wire with black stripe and join another piece of wire to that wire and earth it to the nearest screw or point somewhere on the frame. I don't know why but this fixed the problem for me.
