Default new owner 93 CBR 1000f and questions!

Everyone on here, has been a big help. I was searching for info about the bike befor i got it, and i must say that this web site had the most info. I just got the bike a few days ago. It has 37000 and i payed $2800 for it. Its very clean and its all stock. I love it even though it runs a littel hot in the city.

The only thing the last owner did, was heput a smaller sprocket on the back, 39 teeth, and a larger one on the front, 18 teeth. He did this to improve his mpg. and to lower his rpmonthe highway. The bike has a lot of power still and is still very fast andseemsto have a ton of power. I used to have 1995 gsxr750, so i know what fast it.

My Question.
1. Does changing the sprockets make that big of a differance?

2. Even if I just change the rear sprocket back to stock 42?

3. Do you thinkit is worth it? Is it hard to put a rear sprocket on and how long would it take?

4. Would itput more stress on the motor and maybe shorten the life of the motor?

5. In being a new cbr 1000f owner, what are somethings i should "watch out" for other that the cam chain?
Thankyou everyone for all thehelp and all the wonderful info.

Welcome Anders, you have got yourselfa Swedish name

1. Yes the+1F/-3R reduces the torque on the rear wheel by about 12% which is a lot. There is an Excel gear calculator on this forum, use the search function and you will find the calculator that have been posted by the member Trips from AU.
2. Going up to stock gearing rear will add 6% torque, you will feel it.
3. The best is probably if you go back to stock the next time the complete set has to be replaced. It is not difficult to replacesprockets and if you feel you need more torque right now you can start to change the front sprocket that is cheap and will not require a longer chain. Going up from 39 to 42 rear may need a longer chain.
4. The bike is designed for 17/42 gearing and has no reliabilityissuesdue to that.
5. The cam chain tensioner, CCT,has to be replaced when it doesn't become quiet after a minute from cold start.

I have been reading how everyones bike run hot, in city riding. Minedoes as well. The temp. gauge will get up to 3/4 and then the fan will turn on and run until it gets to 1/2 and then turn off. Is this just how it is and does this hert the motor? I live in San Francsico and it take me about 15 or 20 mins to get it out on to open roads. It this bad to have thebike runninghot for that long?

Hi Anders,

The short answer is that IF the fan brings the temp down when it comes on (as yours does), or stops it from climbing any higher, then there isn't really a problem. however, if the temp continues to rise then that's not a good thing especially if you're sitting in traffic where it's difficult to get rid of the heat.
Here in Australia, it's pretty normal in the summer to get temps around 38C (100f) and my 94 CBR maintains temp even in traffic but my 87 doesn't. For that, I've run a wire from the cooling fan switch module via a panel mounted simple on/off toggle switch to a convenient frame earth. This allows me to switch the fan on manually BEFORE the temps start to rise when I'm in traffic. That way, the temps never go up beyond half even in the worst conditions.
Hope you enjoy your bike, they're a great machine.

My 88 runs up to 3/4 in the city and when the fan come in down to 1/2. It burns your left leg. It runs on 1/4 on the highway. The only thing i have found that whenit is hot enoughto bring the fan in it has a slight flat spot when you take off.

Anders-the temp range sounds okay, the fan cools my 87 down as well in traffic. The open roads are certainly nicer for temps inour coastal area. On your new bike if you're not sure how old each of the fluids and filtersare, you may want to go through them all and have a fresh startwith you on the clock. I recently had a major tune incl. cam chain adj., exhuast swap, carb jetwork and tire mountsperformed at O'Halons in SF with great results. The dealer/service shops tend to not want to work on 10+year old bikes.

I run a "water wetter" type product and make sure the system is compleatly "burped".I found balkemp brand rv cooling system product at walmart, for 6.75$/ qtOn the saber/magna owners forum, is a sectionabout napa temp sensors for honda/accura's that "turn on at a lower temp. check it out. Take your old one to match threads... quite a selection of temps avail.Plumb'n in a manual switch will work great, when flipped before the tempsensor does it,too.
Free and clean, Ripp'n

Changing sprockets will make a difference but the key is to make the difference where you want it!!
