New 1000FK owner South Wales UK. My new project.
Hey all,
Just picked up an 89 'F' Reg 1000FK from a mate in work for silly money really but as it had been standing for between 18 months and 2 years I didn't want to pay top money as I did't know what I was getting.
This is as it was found.
I collected it last weekend and could not get any lights up on the dash even with a new Motobatt AGM battery, so spent a few hours ripping out all the old extra wiring which had been fitted by the PO, which included a remote start/alarm thing and 6 neon blue strip lights behind the panel work!!!
Changed out the main 30a fuse as it was showing a high resistance and I then managed to get it to turn over. A bit of verifying later with plugs, coils and fuel tap etc saw it burst into life with a slight chain rattle ("they all do that sir" by all accounts at least). She now starts with a little choke and warms up to a nice idle.
The brakes were as expected seized solid but a few hours work over the weekend saw all callipers stripped off the bike, all pistons cleaned and pushed back in with a good coat of ACF-50 and fresh fluid and now the brakes are fine although I may yet still change out the caliper seals.
This afternoon, this......
....gave way to this, which was genuinely sitting on the shelf in the garage and had been there a few years (see I knew that would come in handy )......
and the ends of the Nexxus cans got the rust treated and coated with etch primer then some satin black.
The front lower fairings and vee piece have seen better days and if anyone in the UK has some in good condition I may be interested.
The forks are going to need a full rebuild as they are shot and I think the wheels and some of the control equipment will be seeing some fresh powder coat along with the seat getting recovered by Digger in Newport South Wales in the next few weeks. I purchased a matching part worn BT-023 rear tyre from the bay of E for £24!!! which arrived today and so far I haven't spent ANY other money on it!!!
I think it's testament to the build quality of this old bus that nothing has failed or seized solid that can't be put right for minimal outlay.
I hope this old girl gets the thumbs up from the old school on here and I may just have saved another one from the big scrap heap in the sky.......at least I hope I have.

Nice looking ride! A few rust spots but hey, I like them like that. You don't feel bad riding them in the rain. Its the shiny ones you don't want to get dirty.

Cheers guys. The photos are quite flattering TBH, although when I'm done she will be presentable. Just have to find the best product or procedure for bringing white furry alloy engine cases and surface rust on the frame back to life.
Without re-powdercoating the frame what's the best paint to use? I'll be cleaning back the rust and etch priming before painting localised parts that aren't removable. Something like smootherite or should I go for black enamel type paint???
Any advice from the experienced restorers would be great please.
