Default maximum rear tire size

i have a 1996 cbr1000f. right now it has stock tire sizes on it. the front was bald so i got a new one (michelin pilot power). my rear tire only has about 1k miles on it, but its a dunlop and i wanted to match tires, so i figured i might as well go a little wider. what is the max size i can safely fit on there? thanks

180 and bend the chain guard out or it'll rub a notch in it

Welcome to the Forum and the Hurricane section by the way

ok thanks. just to double check, i would need to slim the profile a little, so a 180/55/17 is right? thanks

True but wider you go slower the bike leans/turns ....... 180 is where "most" of us go

180's a sweet spot for deals $$$$ too imo

Having said that that 190 looks good

Hmmm... Maybe a 190 next time..

Looks good..

I run a 180 on my 87 Cane. I also have the 5.5 rim on the back, just in case anyone cares.

Who cares .......jk........ dunno Indy ..... we'd have to get you to start draggin'
her instead of heading for the twisties down at the gap again. Won't find me putting
a 190 on ...... no performance gains imo

One of the mods the guys do with the Aprilia Tuono is to toss the 190 and install a 180 for better handling. I run the 180 and don't see any gains other than looks with the 190. The 180 is only 5mm wider on each side so there is not much difference. There are several new bike models with the 120 Front /180 Rear setup.

Here are just a few,
BMW R1200RT, R1200R, F800R, F800ST, K1300GT
Yamaha FJR1300

Honda ST1300 has a 170 but if it were me I would go with the 180.

The Kawasaki ZZR1200 that is discontinued had the 180.

A little OT but what is the stock size for the '87? I need to get a set soon but the bike is in storage.
