loose downshifts

brand new here , 1st post also.I'm the proud new owner of a 96 1000f , love the bike and have put 2000 miles on her, mostly back and forth to work,40 miles round trip. i've been experimenting with the shock/spring adjuster to find my ride i like best , i went all the way soft for a month and it was really nice and smooth absorb every bump, so i went the other way yesterday, all the way hard, a totaly differant animal,it rode awsome, lightend up the front end and i just felt more confident.now maybe it happened at the same time or not but my downshifts are really loose but up shifts engage fine, it's going into every gear downshifting but it seems like somthing internal is loose, i did a check lastnight on the shifter and every thing is tight, any clue or advice is much appreciated and im glad to be here at the CBR forum.kd

RE: loose downshifts

Is that loose like back lash or loose shifter. I find mine is better with the suspension hard and it has back lash in third.

its weird to describe , the big difference is before the adjustment i could fell every downshift on every gear , now on every downshift it's barely noticable that i did dowwnshift. it changed so much that to the point of every stop light i'm looking down to make sure my shift lever is still attached, kinda scarey.

contacted a local bike shop and they suggested making sure the shifter connections are not wollerd out?? looks like i'll be taking some plastic apart this weekend and just given it a good looking at. kd

11k . tighten the chain by one notch and i think it's fixed, maybe the chain running close to the shifter gave me the feeling that it was the shifter and when i raised the shock it made it that much more evident? i know i'm reaching herebut i put about 60 miles on it after i tighten the chain and it's running great.kd

You seem to have found the problem, but ensure that the slack on the chain is between 16 & 20mm. If the chain is to tight then you will stretch it and wear the sprockets. Best way to do this is to have someone sit on the bike so that it give an accurate reading from the bottom, middle of the chain. Also check your final drive sprocket for any unusual wear.
