Default I got a fuel pump question.

If the electric fuel pump goes out on our bikes. Will it run okay? I wondered about this before. My hurricane always seems to run rich. Here's were the question arose... I've got my bike apart because I'm going thru the whole bike fixing it up. It always ran rich so I decided it was time to run it out of gas and take the carbs off to rebuild them. I did like I have on any other cycle.. I started it up turned the petcock off. It ran for 10 minutes still hasn't stalled. Okay... So I figure the petcock might be bad. I unplug the fuel pump... 15 minutes later still hasn't stalled(aarrghh). Now I know that I've read that my bike will run withou the pump. But will it run okay without rejetting or modifying the fuel supply system? I know a shop had the bike apart before I bought the bike. But I know they didn't pull the carbs. They just drained them. Do our pumps come on when you turn the key on like a car? Should you be able to hear it running? I don't hear mine at all. How can I check to see if it's bad?

i can hear mine run with the key turned on. unhook the line on the carb side of the pump and turn the key on it should tell you if the pump is working, otherwise check the fuse

My 1987 Hurricane's fuel pump went bad about 2 months ago. I am riding without the fuel pump now. I tried wide open up to 150 mph with no problem. But it still better to use the original fuel filter though. You may need to play with piping little bit.

Well my pump works. It's just really quiet. I used Fly70's idea. Once the engine turns over the pump kicks on. No need to fix something that ain't broke. I wondered though... How do our petcocks operate? Does fuel flow continously when it is on, and the pump stops it when the motor is not running? I have a 250 ninja also. On it the petcock allows fuel flow by vacuum. Would the gas overflow the float bowls on our bikes if the gas is not turned off? But thanks for the help guys.

Default RE: I got a fuel pump question.

When you remove the left side cover, you will see the little relay near the fuel pump. Actually, my Hurricane's pump was OK, but the relay was toasted. This greedy man decided to remove the fuel pump. (actually, gas milage became better w/o the pump) The little relay doing the job, turns on off the fuel pump. I bet there is some kind of sensor that is sending signal to the relay. I disassemble the carbs once, but I didn't see any elecrical devices attached on the carb that might be sending the signal to the relay. Also, the relay and the fuel pump do nothing with petcock. The petcock is just shut off, on, or change the fuel flow to the reserve. I red someone's comment that reserve or off position on the petcock don't work after he disassemble the petcock and installed home-made gasket. Our petcocks are reveted, I have no idea how he disassembled and reassembled. According to your earlier comment, evern you shult the petcock, engine is still running.... hummm it's a mistery...
