Default horrible milage+ high rev

Hey fellow lovers of the Cane.

I have just bought my second Cane, a 1000f 1987 this time, had an old beat up 600f prior to this beuty

I love the bike, however I have a coupple of issues, that might be related to eachother.

Problem #1: The bike runs hot. Need to push it beond 50mph in order for it to cool down. And even then it is rather high temp. This is in rather chilly weather too.

problem #2: The bike wont go down to idle when I let go of the gas, it stays up between 3000 and 4000 rpm. If I flick the throttle, like snap it (if you know what I mean), it slowly goes down. In other words, no engine brake (dont know if this is the proper term).

problem #3: The bike uses at least one litre pr. 10 kilometer, at very moderate driving. Afriend of mine has a -94, and it spends app. 0.6 litres pr. 10 kilometers.
This worries me alot.

The engine seem to perform rather well, and appear strong.

I suspected the throttle handle first, it has some wear, but after greasing it up, and adjusting it, the wires run freely.

I have a slight suspision that som of the connecting rods in the carburattors have som slack, and this might make one or two of them not close proparly.

The fuelconsuption on the other hand baffles me.

The heat isue too, but I am going to troubbleshoot this particular issue tomorrow.

All help higly appriciated, and karmapoints coming your way

Update.

Just woke up with a chill going down my spine...

I just realized that the bike reaking of gas, isnt a one time event due to a minor spill...

The bike must have a sigificant leak somewhere in the gas lines/system.

this will be top priority tomorrow!

Check the petcock for leaks , the throttle lines are relaxed and not taut with any sharp
bends & grip is not dragging on the control, as for running hot .....probably the fan
thermo switch down on the radiator ..... easy fix is fit a manual switch or replace it.

Got pics ?

I'm no carb expert by far ... but ... You need to check out your carbs man ... sounds like this bike is running crazy rich ... pull a spark plug and check the color of it ... does it smoke black when you gas on it ?? (jw) ... my first reaction personally would be to check the fuel delivery system honestly ...

EDIT:

Sorry sprock we musta posted at the same time .... lol

Question

I'm thinking throttle cable problem with the engine not going back to idle.

+1 on the throttle cables
Check fuel lines
Maybe pull the tops off the carbs and clean the jets and moving parts - sometimes they can cause sticking........

Your definitely running very rich so the first thing to do is to make sure the choke cable/bar mechanism is operating properly. You have already checked the throttle cables.

Cables being good move to the carburetors. Clean them, it sounds like it could be the floats sticking. Make sure the carburetor pistons are moving freely with a solid "thunk". Clean varnish off all needles and jets, etc.

Sounds like one or more gummed-up carbs. If the piston/needle sticks in the upper position, the carb runs on the main jet, even at idle. If that happens, idle will be super high and mileage will be horrible. Plus, it's unsafe.

I have good confidence that the cables are ok. The linkage between the carbs have som play though, so leaning on this so far.

By the way, the problem with high rev is more so when the bike is hot. When it is cold (the engine), the rev goes down faster.

Found the fuel leak though. So hopin the milage improves.
